Scrap my HP a6403w? Or repair?

My HP Pavilion a6403w died. Apparently the processor died and took the
motherboard with it. That is what a local computer repair shop told me, and
quoted me $450 to replace both.
Should I scrap the HP and buy a new desktop? Can I fix it for less than
$450? I saw several motherboard/processor combos on the internet for sale
for around $150. Should I try to replace them myself?

Thanks for any advice

HP Pavilion a6403w
I'd suggest just replacing the motherboard and processor with a cheaper
combo. Just make sure the motherboard supports the DDR2 RAM that is
currently in your HP A6403W.

Are you sure that's the problem with it? In my many years of
repairing computers, I have only ever came across 1 CPU that has
failed on its own. Its a very rare occurence. My guess is that its
just the motherboard, in which case, it may be easy and cheap to
replace.

By the looks of the spec sheet for that system, the motherboard is a
mATX socket 775 board, which you can find on ncix.com for between $50-
$100 easily.

I'm not sure at all. That is what I was told by a computer repair store.
I'd like to try to replace the motherboard. I'm going to do a little
more online research before I buy a motherboard and try it.

Thanks
Frank
