Network cable unplugged problem

I am wondering if anyone has encountered this before:

I have two computers, one old one operating on windows 2000
professional, the other operating on windows xp.

Both computers when started up say that the network cable is
unplugged.

-I tried the network cable to make sure it is not faulty on a computer
that is fully functioning and the internet works fine with that
cable.
-I tried taking out the network card and putting it in another slot,
that did not work.
-I have also checked the settings under device manager/the
adapter(whatever name it is) and then changing it to full duplex and
10base t or whatever the correct terms are. That did not work as
well.
-I could not delete the network connection to try to create a new one,
it would not allow me to do that.
-I also tried to manually put in the IP and DNS addresses, that did
not work.
-Other things that did not work as well were disabling the network
connection and enabling it again.

The computers at one point did work, it just seemed like one day they
stopped working. I have had a router for years now and they had been
working on that router but then just stopped working.

My current internet connection is DSL. The computers otherwise are
fine to operate, it is just the online part that I am unable to get
working.

If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated. I am not sure
what other info is required but please let me know if you if you need
other info.

Thanks

So, you have 2 computers, one with XP and one with 2000 that are
connected to a router by ethernet?

When you say you tested the "cable" on a working computer, you didn't
use plural, which I assume means you only have 1 cable? If you have 2
computers, you should have 2 cables connecting to a router.

I'm just a little confused as to your setup.

I will try to clarify, the two computers are currently not hooked up
to the internet at the moment. I have a netbook that I use and I had
shelved those two computers. I wanted to put one of these computers
upstairs after being shelved for a while so I turned them on to check
that they still functioned. I turned one on and tried to get it to
work with all of the things that I listed. I have two of those
internet cable things, i took one and tried it with the windows 2000
professional computer and it said network cable unplugged. I then
wanted to check to make sure the cable wasn't faulty so I hooked that
up to my functioning netbook and turned off the wireless signal so it
would have to rely on that cable and it worked fine.

After trying to get that windows 2000 professional computer to work
andhaving failed i unplugged that one and then went and got the
computer with windows xp. i then proceeded to do all the same things
that i had listed to this computer and none of them worked.

So both computers are not running simultaneously, i just tried each of
them at separate times to try to get them to work and both said
network cable unplugged.

does that clarify it a bit?

Yip, that clarifies it.

When you have the cable plugged in to either of the working ones, do
you see any activity lights on the network port, there should be 2 LED
lights right where you plug the cable into the computer.

Hmm I didn't see any lights at all where it was plugged into the
computer. So would that mean that they're both dead?

Its certainly odd if both computer's network ports are broken, hell of
a coincidence.

Has this particular cable been used on either of the non-working
computers before? I know you have tested the cable with a different
system, but any chance you have another cable to try?

There should be lights. Make sure that the network ports are enabled
in the bios. Watch for lights when you power on the computer before
it gets into windows.

I'm running out of ideas.

I've had this problem before on an older computer and on the one I am
currently using. Sorry to say it, but your card is dead. You'll need
to buy a new one. Good thing they're cheap.

2 things to try before assuming card is dead. I note you mentioned
you wanted to use these upstairs (presumably, the cables are of
significant length). 1) It might be that the cables are too long for
the NICs involved - I wired my entire home, and in one room, a
particular machine could not grab an IP, yet other devices worked just
fine from there using the exact same cable - moved the machine to a
different room (shorter cable - voila!). The second thing you might
want to tweak is that the 10/100 setting of the NIC is manually set it
to 10mb to see if that works as it may be having difficulty
auto-negotiating over the distance involved. Odd, to be sure, but
I've seen some pretty odd behaviour with computers in my time. :o)

Thomas
